Maggie, a volunteer working 40 hours a week at the organization, said they previously had to close a trauma recovery home due to a lack of funding, and the new investment could help them reopen. The organization provides a drop-in centre offering women a place to shower, eat, sleep, and let their guard down, as well as resources for women trying to get out of the cycle of abuse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Liz Hawkes, an ambassador for Community of Hope, emphasized the importance of funding for front-line organizations. “I would hope that they talk about action. I would hope they were talking about funding. Getting our name out there is key, and getting some funds available so we can reopen the trauma recovery home, so we can expand into some of our vision we have for an emergency shelter,” Hawkes said. She also expressed hope that the ministers were discussing penalties for crimes, emphasizing the need for a comprehensive approach to addressing gender-based violence that includes both prevention and accountability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
